Wolfeboro, NH

Located in New Hampshire’s Carroll County, Wolfoboro, including the village of Wolfeboro Falls, is resort area on Lake Winnipesaukee. The town was granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1759, and named Wolfeborough in honor of English General James Wolfe. In 1771 Colonial Governor John Wentworth, Benning’s nephew, established an estate on the site. This was the first summer country estate in northern New England. The town officially settled in 1768, and was incorporated in 1770.

Over the years, Wolfeboro became a popular summer colony, particularly for families from Boston and southern New Hampshire. It’s no wonder that the town’s moto is “The Oldest Summer Resort in America.” According to Wikipedia, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Kurt Vonnegut, Drew Barrymore, French president Nicolas Sarkozy, and Jimmy Fallon have all vacationed in Wolfeboro.

With a local population of just about 7,000 year-round residents, Wolfeboro is full of New England charm. From its lakeside hot dog and coffee stands to its winding main street full of arts and crafts shops, there’s something for just about everyone in Wolfeboro.
